If you spent your EVE carrier in hi sec ans finally decided to go to LS, the first thing you need to prepare for is the lost of your ship and possibly get podded. And it is not only ISKs loss matter. It is more about psychological effect you may suffer for hours or even days and finally decide that LS not for you at all.
It doesn't matter what kind of ship you fly and how careful you are. It is simple matter of fact that you will get killed early or later. The question is only when. And it hurts. Especially first few times.
Many new pilots suffer so-called "finger syndrome". They take the lost of the ship too serious and even prospective to loose one can keep them in hi sec forever. For people, who played EVE for a while, theirs chars became sort of "second life". Long process of choosing name, developing skils, making is something unique looking, etc... at some point may make your EVE character part of your real life personality, especially if you have tendency to play this game 23/7. And loosing ship can make you feel so terrible that you may rage quit EVE for a while. If you feel it is going happens to you, better not to try at the moment. May be once you read my blog to the end, you may change your mind.
In any event, you should always remember that all your ships and other stuff are just bunch of digital data, stored at CCP servers, and loosing ship is just erasing some records from this database, nothing more. You are not going to loose you leg, arm or even finger by loosing your ship. Never forget it.
Another thing can be issue is your ego. You probably lost couple of ships (may be more) here and there to npc. But nobody know about it, unless you told people about it. Get killed in PvP is a bit different. Because your lose will be posted on BattleClinic or other public kill boards. And everybody can see it from now. And this fact can hurt even more, that just loosing ISKs.
As I stated before, my blog is about to help you reduce risks to get in such situation. But you are not invulnerable, as nothing in this game since you undoc from station. Just deal with it.
If you care so much about your reputation and ego, try alt for the beginning. If your virtual wealth means too much for you fly relatively cheap ships. Just get used to looses, even if it takes tons of rookie's ships.
I will be not honest with you, if I say that I never suffer "finger syndrome". I did. My first voyage to low sec was in Cheetah and I was scared to death. But after few month in LS I started feeling quiet comfortable myself and even more secure that in hi sec. I still hate to loose my ships now too, but only because I need to buy and fit it again. And I hate fitting.
